You don’t need to be an industry insider to know that video has emerged as a powerful tool in the digital age now more than ever, and increasingly so. But what many don’t realize is that video can be just as impactful internally as it is externally.
Think: boosting employee engagement, retention, and overall satisfaction.
While we’re hot on the heels of our upcoming webinar, The Power of Video for Internal Communications in the TikTok & Instagram Era, PlayPlay’s very own Marketing Manager Jaymi Onorato and Workvivo’s Senior Customer Community Manager Barbara Booras took time to share some of their key insights and predictions on video in internal communications and how to get started.
Let’s dive in.
Q: Hey Barbara, to start us off – How does Workvivo use video content in their internal comms?
Barbara: Well, we believe it’s important to meet your employees where they’re at and to deliver key messages in a format that resonates with them personally. Workvivo provides a consumer-grade experience that supports video from comms teams and employees, live streams from leaders, and more. Since we’re now a part of Zoom, we’re so excited to continue to level up that video experience! We know video-forward, mobile-first internal comms get the highest engagement.
Q: So what do you all at Workvivo predict to be the next BIG trend for internal video content?
Barbara: Great question. Like I said, we’re huge believers in open comms. And we think we’ll continue to see an increase in having employees in front of the camera even more. Think employee reporters at events, employees interviewing leaders, you name it. We want our employees front and center and also to contribute to video content themselves. We can encourage that through some really engaging challenges, contests, and more.
Q: And how about on PlayPlay’s side, Jaymi? What trends are you guys noticing in video content when it comes to internal comms?
Jaymi: Two words: snackable content – especially for teaching and learning use cases. These are short, bite-sized videos that are great for teaching employees who have busy schedules. It’s the next big thing for on-demand learning in corporations. According to TechSmith, 48% of employees shared that video is the most engaging way to communicate with them after all. And to piggyback off of Barbara, I’d also add user-generated content, where employees are sharing their experiences. I think of, for example, a ‘Day in the life of a PlayPlayer at the New York office’ type of video, or even a ‘CEO interview,’ etcetera.
Q: Here’s a good one. What's one misconception PlayPlay hears most often about video for internal comms?
Jaymi: That video creation is time-consuming, expensive, and difficult without having experience already. The truth is, today, anyone can be a storyteller – you don’t have to be a videographer, have fancy editing skills, or need to turn to agencies to create impactful video content. With solutions like PlayPlay, you can create stunning videos at scale and in-house (avoiding those long turnaround times and huge agency fees).
